In a bid to protect consumers from potentially hazardous products, authorities in Zimbabwe have launched a crackdown on counterfeit goods. During a recent inspection in downtown Harare, officials from the Consumer Protection Commission and Trade Measures Department, accompanied by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, uncovered a stash of fake products, including mealie meal packages.
The fake goods, which included counterfeit Pearlenta products, were discovered in several tuck shops. Experts from National Foods Limited confirmed that the products were fake, citing discrepancies in packaging and logos.
“We urge consumers to be vigilant when shopping for groceries, as these fake products can pose serious health risks,” said Tom Muleya from the Consumer Protection Commission. “We will continue to work with retailers and law enforcement to root out these illicit activities.”
The authorities have confiscated the fake products and handed them over to the police for further investigation. Retailers found selling counterfeit goods could face severe penalties.
As the crackdown continues, consumers are advised to be cautious when purchasing goods and to report any suspicious products to the authorities.
