A former beer garden in Bulawayo’s Burombo suburb has been transformed into an illegal housing settlement, sparking concerns about public health and safety. The Burombo beerhall, once a licensed drinking spot, now houses at least five families and two small-scale manufacturing operations, with residents living without access to basic amenities like water, electricity, and toilets.

Local leaders are sounding the alarm, warning of a potential health crisis due to the unsanitary conditions. Ward 8 Residents’ Chairperson Charles Ncube says the site is “deteriorating under our watch” and urges the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) to take action. Residents pay $25 per month in rent despite the lack of services.

A visit to the site revealed makeshift living conditions, with water fetched from nearby flats and residents using gas stoves or charcoal for cooking. The lack of toilets has led to some individuals relieving themselves in undesignated areas, posing a serious health hazard.

The community is calling for the BCC to review the lease and determine whether the terms are being followed. Councillor Edwin Ndlovu confirms the issue has been raised and the matter has been referred to the BCC for investigation. The residents propose converting the site into a community market if it can’t be restored to its original function.
