Bribery on a Budget: $30 Gets You Out of Jail Free

In a shocking display of integrity… for sale, a police officer stationed at ZRP Nkulumane in Bulawayo decided to let two robbery suspects walk free after accepting a whopping US$30 bribe. Because, you know, that’s probably a decent amount of money for a police officer’s monthly salary… or a nice lunch.

Shepherd Vutete, the officer in question, was charged with criminal abuse of office and appeared before magistrate Archie Wochiunga. The court heard that Vutete released the suspects, John Dube and Eugene (whose particulars are still unknown, because apparently, the police didn’t think it was worth investigating), along with a motor vehicle that was being held as an exhibit in the robbery case.

The defense lawyer, Takunda Chapisa, announced that they would be seeking bail at Vutete’s next court appearance. Because, you know, being corrupt is totally a bail-worthy offense… as long as you have a good lawyer.

Tafara Dzimbanete represented the National Prosecuting Authority, probably wondering how a police officer could be so… creative with his duties.

The real question is, what’s the going rate for police officers these days? US$30 for two suspects and a vehicle? Sounds like a steal.
