The incident occurred at the 80-kilometre peg along the Beitbridge-Gwanda Road, where detectives intercepted a haulage truck driven by Mushonga.

Upon searching the vehicle, authorities uncovered a substantial contraband consisting of 99 boxes of Astra Pain Cough Syrup, 60 boxes of Broncleer Cough Syrup, and 24 boxes of Benylin Cough Syrup. The seized medicines are suspected to be destined for illicit distribution.

This recent arrest follows similar incidents in the area. In June 2025, detectives from the same unit apprehended four individuals with 720 bottles of Benylin and Broncleer cough syrup at Beitbridge Border Post. Another truck driver, Temptation Guzhira, was arrested with dagga and 289 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup at a Bubi Roadblock. These incidents demonstrate the unit’s continued efforts to combat drug smuggling in the region .

The Zimbabwe Republic Police’s CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the smuggling attempt. If convicted, Mushonga faces penalties under Zimbabwe’s laws governing illicit substances and medicines.
