Bangladesh Ex-PM Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to Death for Crimes Against Humanity

Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity, linked to the deadly crackdown on student-led protests in 2024. The International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka found her guilty of incitement to murder, issuing unlawful orders to kill, and failing to prevent atrocities despite holding command responsibility.

Hasina, 78, has been living in exile in India since her ouster in August 2024 and was tried in absentia. The verdict, delivered on November 17, also sentenced former Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in the same case.

The ruling comes just months before Bangladesh’s next general elections, heightening political tensions in the country. Hasina’s supporters claim the trial was politically motivated, while the interim government asserts it as a vindication of justice .
