Jose Mourinho Returns to Benfica as Manager

In a shocking move, Portuguese football club Benfica has appointed Jose Mourinho as their new manager, signing a two-year deal that could extend until June 2027. The 62-year-old Portuguese tactician replaces Bruno Lage, who was sacked after a disappointing Champions League defeat to Qarabag.

Mourinho’s appointment marks a homecoming for the legendary coach, who began his managerial career at Benfica in 2000. Although his first stint was brief, lasting only 11 matches, Mourinho’s return signals a new chapter for both the manager and the club. “When I was faced with the possibility of coaching Benfica, I didn’t think twice,” Mourinho said at a press conference. “This is a club close to my heart, and I’m ready to give everything to bring success back to this great institution.”
Mourinho inherits a talented but underperforming Benfica squad that currently sits sixth in the Primeira Liga, trailing rivals Porto by five points. His immediate task will be to stabilize the team and instill his trademark defensive solidity and counter-attacking flair. The Champions League presents both an opportunity and a challenge, with high-profile clashes against Chelsea and Real Madrid looming in the near future.

Benfica president Rui Costa emphasized the need for a “profile of a winner” after sacking Lage, and Mourinho certainly fits the bill. With 21 major trophies to his name, including two Champions League titles, Mourinho’s pedigree and winning mentality make him an ideal candidate to restore Benfica’s status as a European powerhouse.

Mourinho’s first match back at Benfica will be against AVS in the Portuguese top flight. As the team prepares for their upcoming fixtures, all eyes will be on Mourinho to see how he shapes the team and navigates the challenges ahead.
