A man already serving a 10-year sentence for raping a minor at a Harare prison has had his punishment significantly increased after being convicted of s3xually assaulting a fellow inmate. Emmanuel Magede was handed an additional 12-year sentence by Harare regional magistrate Letwin Rwodzi, extending his total incarceration period to 22 years.
The court was told that the incident took place on July 23, 2025, around midday, when Magede allegedly forced himself on his cellmate while the victim was bathing in the prison bathroom. Magistrate Rwodzi condemned the act as “aggravated and intolerable,” emphasizing the justice system’s responsibility to safeguard the rights and dignity of all prisoners, regardless of their crimes. She also highlighted Magede’s lack of remorse, referencing his previous conviction for rape.
Prosecutor Loveit Muringwa explained that the assault was witnessed by another inmate, Tinashe Muyambo, who interrupted the attack and reported it to fellow prisoner Antony Chambarambanda. The case was then brought to the attention of a prison officer, Tafadzwa Nembaware, leading to a formal police complaint. The victim underwent a medical examination, and the affidavit from this examination was submitted as key evidence during the trial.
