92-year-old President of Cameroon seeking Re-election for an Eighth Term

Paul Biya, the 92-year-old president of Cameroon, is seeking re-election for an eighth term in the October 2025 presidential election. If successful, he would extend his nearly 43-year tenure, making him almost 100 years old by the end of his term.

81 candidates have registered to run against Biya, including 7 female candidates. The opposition is fragmented, with multiple candidates vying for votes, which could bolster Biya’s chances of re-election. The final list of candidates will be published on August 13

Biya’s age and health have sparked rumors of a potential military coup or succession crisis. Economic pressures and limited opportunities for the youth population are driving calls for change

The outcome of the election will determine whether the country embraces new leadership or continues under Biya’s long-standing rule. The youth, who make up a significant portion of the population, are calling for fresh perspectives and reforms to address pressing issues like unemployment and limited economic opportunities.
