Residents Demand Probe into Sale of State Land

Residents of Harare’s Eastview and Caledonia suburbs are calling for an investigation into the sale of state land meant for public facilities, including schools, to a private developer. They accuse Goromonzi Rural District Council (GRDC) officials of colluding with land barons.

The 3.5-hectare land was initially designated for a public school, but was sold to a private individual. Residents, led by Tatenda Taero, claim the deal is marred by irregularities and GRDC’s silence raises suspicions.

With nearest government schools 8km away, residents are concerned about the impact on their children. Over 500 individuals have signed a petition to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, demanding answers.

Residents request key documents, including meeting minutes, council resolutions, and financial details. Local leaders, including MP Paddington Zhanda and Ruben Akili of Combined Harare Residents Association, echo concerns, highlighting lost revenue and need for government intervention.

Residents seek government intervention to reclaim public land and ensure access to essential services. The situation highlights the need for transparency and accountability in land transaction
