Zimbabweans holding unlicensed or illegal firearms have just 30 days to hand them over to the authorities without facing any questions or prosecution. President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s national firearm amnesty, effective from September 24 to October 24, 2025, is a one-month window of opportunity to go from gun-toting outlaw to law-abiding citizen.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has warned that those who miss this deadline will be in for a world of trouble. “Don’t wait until it’s too late,” the police seem to be saying. “Hand over your illegal firearms and ammunition, and we will just mind our business”.
This amnesty comes after a surge in firearms misuse, with many crimes linked to unregistered guns. The police have noted that some of these firearms were obtained through company closures, lapsed gun club memberships, or inheritance.
So, if you’re hiding an unlicensed firearm, now’s the time to come clean. And if you’re a licensed owner, don’t forget to update your records and ensure you’re compliant with the Firearms Act.
The clock is ticking, and the ZRP is ready to conduct physical checks and verifications on suspected illegal firearm owners after October 24. Don’t get caught out , surrender your illegal firearms and take advantage of this amnesty. It’s a chance to go from hot to cool, without getting burned.
