ZPRA Veterans Association Slams Government’s Treatment of Liberation War Heroes

As Zimbabwe commemorates Heroes Day, the ZPRA Veterans Association has launched a scathing attack on the government’s handling of liberation war veterans and citizens. The association demands that the government prioritize the welfare of veterans who fought for the country’s independence.

ZPRA Veterans Association deputy spokesperson Joakim Moyo expressed dismay at the government’s lack of support for veterans, saying, “We cannot continue to celebrate Heroes Day with speeches and parades while the true heroes of our independence are left behind.” This highlights the struggles of many veterans who live in poverty without access to land or meaningful livelihoods.

The association has outlined several key demands, including prioritizing land allocation to liberation war veterans and their families, guaranteeing veterans’ welfare, and ensuring fair economic participation for all Zimbabweans. They also call for the preservation of liberation history, recognizing the contributions of both ZPRA and Zanla without bias.

The ZPRA Veterans Association urges the government to take concrete steps to address the issues affecting veterans and citizens. Moyo concluded, “The blood that won our freedom must yield a harvest for all. Empower people and you have unleashed unlimited and transforming effort.” This powerful statement underscores the need for meaningful action to support those who fought for Zimbabwe’s independence
