A devastating loss has shaken the maritime community as Rumbidzai Nyamurowa, a young Zimbabwean crew member of the Viking Star Ship, is presumed dead after jumping into the Mediterranean Sea on October 27, 2025. Italian authorities are leading an urgent search for her body, but as of October 31, no recovery has been reported.
The tragedy unfolded around 11:30 a.m. while the Viking Star was en route from the Greek island of Crete to Sicily, Italy. The motive remains unknown. Viking Cruises, in a statement, cited their “deep sadness” and commitment to protecting the privacy of Nyamurowa’s family, withholding further details.
Nyamurowa, a dedicated member of the Viking Star’s crew, leaves behind grieving loved ones in Zimbabwe. Her employer expressed condolences but offered no timeline for the search, which involves Italian coast guard and naval units.
Colleagues and friends describe Nyamurowa as hardworking and kind. “This is heartbreaking,” said a coworker. “We pray for her safe return, but fear the worst.”
The incident echoes past maritime tragedies, where survival rates for overboard cases are grim (only 48 of 212 survived in a 2009–2019 study) .
Nyamurowa’s family, reached in Harare, urged patience: “We hold on to hope, but prepare for the unthinkable.”
