Trabablas Roundabout Controversy: True Cost Revealed

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has sparked controversy by revealing the actual cost of the Trabablas Roundabout project to be US$114.3 million, significantly higher than the previously reported US$88 million.

According to Ncube, the project was funded through a loan facility of US$88 million and US$26.3 million from the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights (SDR). Initially, Ncube stated that the SDR funds were a prerequisite for activating the loan, but later clarified that the amount was used to cover unexpected costs, primarily relocation expenses.

The revelation has raised questions about budget transparency and accountability. The increased cost has sparked public debate, with many calling for greater clarity on the project’s financing.

The Trabablas Roundabout project has become a focal point for discussions on infrastructure development and fiscal responsibility. As the government moves forward, citizens are demanding more transparency in public project funding and expenditures.
