Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has confirmed he was overthrown in a military coup. “I have indeed been overthrown. I can’t say too much, otherwise they’ll confiscate my phone. I’m currently at the military headquarters,” he stated .
Embaló said his Minister of the Interior, Botché Candé, and top military officials, including Generals Biague Na Ntan and Mamadou Touré, were also arrested. He claimed he wasn’t subjected to violence and accused the army chief of staff of leading the coup .
The military announced it had taken control, suspended institutions, and imposed a curfew. Opposition figures Domingos Simões Pereira and Fernando Dias da Costa were also arrested and held at Bissau airbase .
The coup occurred before official election results were announced, with both Embaló and Dias claiming victory. The international community, including the UN and ECOWAS, expressed concern and urged restraint .
