In a bizarre incident, a Harare woman and her aunt attempted to spring an armed robbery suspect from custody at Parirenyatwa Hospital. Delight Nhepera and Edita Kundishora’s plan was as dramatic as it was doomed.
According to prosecutors, Nhepera’s husband, Simbarashe Makunura, was being held under guard when he splashed water on the prison officer’s face, a move that might have been more effective in a water balloon fight. Nhepera then snatched the officer’s rifle and tossed it to her husband, while Kundishora kept watch at the door.
The plan quickly unraveled when Makunura, now armed, tried to shoot the officer but ended up in a scuffle instead. Despite firing three shots, he missed the officer, who managed to disarm and subdue him.
The would-be rescuers fled the scene but were later apprehended. The court advised Nhepera and Kundishora to seek bail at the High Court, and they’ll be back in court on October 6. It seems their plan didn’t quite add up , like a math problem gone wrong.
