Councillor Caught Red-Handed: Nobody Makoni’s 40-Month Vacation To Jail

In a shocking turn of events, 52-year-old Epworth Councillor Nobody Makoni has traded in his badge of honor for a prison uniform. The Harare Magistrates’ Court sentenced Makoni to 40 months in prison, with 10 months suspended, for criminal abuse of duty. Looks like someone’s cushy job as a public servant didn’t quite work out as planned!

Makoni, representing Ward 6 in Epworth, had a brilliant idea – demand bribes from unsuspecting citizens in exchange for “facilitating” property transfers. He pocketed $450 from one poor soul and $100 from another, claiming he had the authority to make it all happen. Except, he didn’t. Oops!

The National Prosecuting Authority wasn’t amused by Makoni’s antics, and neither were the courts. “Your actions as a public officer are supposed to inspire trust, not corruption,” the judge might have said (okay, maybe not exactly, but it sounds fitting).

Makoni will have plenty of time to think about his mistakes – 30 months’ worth. As a councillor, he was supposed to serve the people, not his own pockets. Guess that’s one way to learn about accountability!

Let’s hope this serves as a warning to other public officials tempted to follow in Makoni’s footsteps. After all, integrity is not just a virtue; it’s also a job requirement!
