Concerns Raised Over ZANU-PF’s Handling of Ndebele Names and Gender References

A growing wave of criticism has emerged targeting the ruling party ZANU-PF over repeated inaccuracies in the spelling of Ndebele names and incorrect gender references in official documents. The issue was highlighted most recently in a document featuring the name of a prominent figure, Babongile, which was repeatedly misspelled as “Babonjiwe.” Additionally, the individual, a man, was incorrectly referred to using feminine pronouns.

This error has sparked frustration among members of the Ndebele-speaking community and cultural commentators alike, as it signals a disregard for the accurate representation of identities and cultural respect. The problem is particularly painful considering the document in question was signed by a party official from Matabeleland, a region where Ndebele is widely spoken and cultural accuracy is a matter of pride.

Critics argue that such mistakes are not mere typographical errors but reflect deeper issues within the party’s communication and editorial processes. “It is upsetting to see that even the smallest details, such as the correct spelling of a name or appropriate gender reference, are overlooked. This shows a lack of respect for individual identities and our culture,” said a local cultural analyst.

The absence of thorough proofreading or cultural consultation in producing official documents raises questions about ZANU-PF’s internal quality controls and commitment to inclusivity. Observers suggest that these errors could erode public confidence in the party’s ability to represent and respect all Zimbabwean communities equally.
