The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has intensified its efforts to promote road safety in Harare, arresting 1,050 individuals and impounding 479 pirate taxis since July 22, 2025. Of the impounded vehicles, 10 have been confirmed to be stolen, and investigations are underway by the CID Vehicle Theft Section.
The ZRP’s operation aims to curb the menace of pirate taxis and reckless driving in Harare. Many of the pirate taxis were found to be unregistered with the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR), posing a significant risk to public safety.
In addition to the pirate taxis, 308 touts have been arrested, with some taken to court and remanded to July 31, 2025. Others have paid deposit fines, while some are being screened for repeat offenses.
The ZRP has also flagged 551 traffic violators who drove away or escaped upon approaching police checkpoints. The vehicle registration numbers will be published soon, serving as a warning to those who flout traffic rules.
The ZRP urges the public to promote road safety by observing the country’s road rules and regulations. By working together, we can reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on our roads.
In other news, the ZRP has arrested suspects in connection with two murder cases. In Chegutu, three men were arrested for allegedly assaulting a 20-year-old man with a hoe, log, and sjambok, resulting in his death. In Madlambuzi, a 21-year-old man was arrested for stabbing a 19-year-old man with a knife following an argument over a girlfriend. The suspects are currently facing murder charges.
