Zimbabwean Journalist Arrested Over SADC Commentary

Faith Zaba, a senior journalist and editor of the Zimbabwe Independent, was arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for allegedly undermining the authority of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Zaba’s arrest stems from an article that mocked Zimbabwe’s assumption of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) chairmanship, with some critics labeling the regional bloc a “trade union of dictators.”

Zaba’s lawyer, Chris Mhike, confirmed that she would spend the night in custody before appearing at the Harare Magistrates Court. Despite providing medical confirmation of her severe illness, police insisted on detaining her overnight.

This arrest comes on the heels of another journalist from the same media house, Alpha Media Holdings (AMH), being detained for 72 days. The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) has condemned Zaba’s arrest, citing a “disturbing pattern of intimidation and suppression” against independent journalism in Zimbabwe.

The repeated arrests of journalists in Zimbabwe raise concerns about the state of press freedom in the country. The treatment of Zaba and other journalists highlights the need for greater protection and respect for media freedom.
