A Zimbabwean man, Kasikai Chinyanga, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 18 years for the brutal murder of his wife, Veronica Chinyanga, in Broxburn, Scotland. The attack occurred just two weeks after a domestic abuse case against him was dropped.
According to prosecutors, Veronica was attacked with a garden fork and then stabbed in the stomach in their backyard on June 9, 2024. Neighbors heard her screams and begged for her life as Chinyanga continued the assault. Despite their pleas, he showed no panic or remorse.
The court heard that there had been a history of domestic incidents between the couple. In fact, a domestic abuse case against Chinyanga was dropped on May 27, 2024, due to Veronica’s reluctance to attend court. Just a week before her death, Veronica expressed fears that her husband was “bitter” and “not going to forgive” her for calling the police.
Chinyanga admitted to the murder and was sentenced to life in prison. Lord Mulholland, who passed sentence, described the killing as “cowardly, savage, and brutal.” The judge reduced the minimum sentence from 20 years due to Chinyanga’s early guilty plea. Chinyanga’s lawyer described him as “very remorseful,” but the severity of the crime speaks for itself.
The sentence brings some closure to a tragic case that highlights the devastating consequences of domestic abuse. Veronica’s death serves as a reminder of the importance of taking domestic violence seriously and supporting those who may be at risk.
