The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has raised concerns about the growing number of illegally acquired firearms across the country, warning that this trend is fueling serious crimes. Because who doesn’t love a good game of “gun roulette” in the midst of a robbery?
ZRP National Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi reminded the public that acquiring and owning firearms is a tightly controlled process. Firearm certificates are issued by the Controller of Firearms, and any deviation from the law is a punishable offense. In other words, don’t try to be a cowboy – follow the rules.
Nyathi emphasized that firearm holders must renew their certificates and notify authorities about changes in their addresses. It’s not that hard to keep your paperwork up to date, folks. He also warned that upon the death of a licensed firearm holder, the weapon must be handed over to the nearest police station. No inheriting guns like they’re family heirlooms.
The police are urging the public to report any suspicious firearm-related activity. If you see something, say something – it’s that simple. Nyathi added, “We continue to underscore the importance of exercising due diligence when acquiring firearms.” Don’t buy guns from shady characters on the street; it’s not worth the risk.
