Bulawayo — Three members of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) have been arrested and brought before the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court in connection with a series of violent robberies allegedly committed in Fort Rixon while they were dressed in military uniform.
The accused, Iphithule Mlotshwa (24), Hamlet Mlotshwa (21) and Haulezwe Mlotshwa (25), appeared before magistrate Shingirai Mutiro, facing several counts of robbery.
According to prosecutor Nkanyezi Xaba, the incidents occurred on 24 December, when the trio allegedly descended on the Claremont mining area armed with axes, knives, electric shock devices, handcuffs and torches.
The court heard that the suspects allegedly forced their way into the bedroom of Qondisani Moyo, where they assaulted and handcuffed him before stealing US$2,800.
The accused then reportedly moved to another residence, belonging to Trust Ndlovu, from where they stole a smartphone valued at US$100. They are also accused of robbing Bukhosi Mkandla of US$350 after entering his bedroom.
At Claremont Business Centre, the trio allegedly attacked Atila Nyathi and made off with US$1,200.
Prosecutors further told the court that Press Luphahla was severely assaulted after the suspects discovered he had no valuables.
The three soldiers were remanded in custody and are expected to return to court on 9 January next year.
