Three police officers based at Dzivarasekwa Police Station have appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing charges of criminal abuse of office in connection with an alleged illegal fingerprinting scheme.
The accused, Kevin Mareyanadzo (37), Likwa Moyo (40) and Vongai Munapo (33), were remanded to 2 February 2026 after Magistrate Jessie Kufa granted each of them bail set at US$150. As part of their bail conditions, the trio was ordered not to interfere with State witnesses until the matter is concluded.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police Harare Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit acted on a tip-off earlier this week alleging that fingerprinting services were being conducted unlawfully at Customs House, near Harare Central Police Station.
Investigators reportedly found Mareyanadzo in the basement parking area with six members of the public who were completing fingerprint forms for police clearance. Subsequent interviews revealed that each person had allegedly been asked to pay US$10 for the service.
The court heard that a search of Mareyanadzo’s vehicle led to the alleged recovery of improvised fingerprinting equipment and documents containing fingerprint records believed to have already been processed.
Further investigations resulted in Mareyanadzo implicating his colleagues Moyo and Munapo, leading to their arrest. Authorities also established that Mareyanadzo was not stationed at Harare Central Police Station, but at Dzivarasekwa Police Station.
The case remains under investigation as proceedings continue.
