English Football League has launched an investigation into Southampton following allegations that a club staff member was caught spying on Middlesbrough training sessions ahead of their crucial Championship play-off semi-final.
The alleged incident reportedly took place on Thursday, just two days before the first leg at the Riverside Stadium. According to reports, a Southampton performance analyst was seen recording Middlesbrough’s training and taking pictures of tactical preparations before being confronted and asked to delete the footage.
Middlesbrough were said to be furious over the incident and immediately reported the matter to the EFL, which has now formally requested observations from Southampton as part of its investigation.
The EFL confirmed the matter is being treated as potential misconduct under league regulations. Current rules clearly prohibit clubs from directly or indirectly observing another team’s training sessions within 72 hours of a match.
The controversy has quickly drawn comparisons to the infamous 2019 “Spygate” scandal involving Leeds United and former manager Marcelo Bielsa. Leeds were fined £200,000 after a staff member was caught watching Derby County training sessions before a match, with Bielsa later admitting he had sent staff to observe opponents throughout the season.
With promotion to the Premier League on the line, tensions were already high between Southampton and Middlesbrough. This latest controversy has now added even more drama to an already massive play-off showdown.
