A shocking murder trial has concluded in Zimbabwe, with a 28-year-old man convicted of brutally killing his 15-year-old sister in a ritual killing. Isaac Mashonga was found guilty of beheading his sister, Dadirai, in their kitchen hut in Magunje in 2017.
According to court testimony, Mashonga and an accomplice, Robert Tichareva, who has since passed away, allegedly conspired to kill Dadirai for ritual purposes, with Mashonga promised $4,000 for the beheading. The court heard that Mashonga led Tichareva to the victim’s room, where she was strangled and decapitated using a kitchen knife, axe, and adze.
In a twist of fate, Mashonga lost his sight while awaiting trial, and prison doctors confirmed he is now 80% blind. This development has left him dependent on fellow inmates for daily care.
High Court Judge Justice Philda Muzofa convicted Mashonga of murder in aggravating circumstances, citing the shocking nature of the crime and its impact on the community. Despite considering Mashonga’s youth, pre-trial custody, and disability, the court ruled that retribution and deterrence must prevail, and Mashonga now faces decades behind bars .
