R&B singer R. Kelly’s life is hanging in the balance after a harrowing incident in prison. According to his lawyer, Beau B. Brindley, Kelly collapsed in his cell on June 13 due to a suspected medication overdose. The 58-year-old singer was rushed to Duke University Hospital, where doctors discovered blood clots in his legs and lungs, recommending immediate surgery.
However, in a shocking turn of events, prison guards allegedly removed Kelly from the hospital before the procedure could be performed, sending him back to solitary confinement. Brindley claims this was done against medical advice, putting Kelly’s life at risk.
Kelly’s legal team asserts that the overdose was no coincidence. Just two days prior, they had filed a motion seeking his transfer from the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in North Carolina. Brindley believes the excessive medication dose was intentional, citing a potential conspiracy to kill Kelly.
After being returned to prison, Kelly was placed in solitary confinement under reportedly inhumane conditions. According to Brindley, Kelly has been sleeping with spiders crawling on him, has no access to phone calls, and cannot eat food from the commissary. Fearing poisoning, Kelly has allegedly gone days without eating.
Kelly’s lawyers claim that prison staff and white supremacist groups, including the Aryan Brotherhood, were conspiring to kill Kelly to suppress alleged misconduct during his prosecution. A sworn affidavit from inmate Mikeal Glenn Stine supports these allegations.
Federal prosecutors have dismissed the claims as “deeply unserious” and “repugnant.” However, Kelly’s legal team remains adamant that his life is in danger and is seeking emergency relief.
A court hearing on the matter is scheduled for June 20. Kelly’s lawyers are also exploring an appeal to President Donald Trump for intervention.
