Police in Bulawayo, working alongside key stakeholders, have issued a stern warning to residents to celebrate the New Year responsibly, stressing that reckless conduct, illegal festivities and road law violations will not be tolerated as security operations are stepped up across the city.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said law enforcement officers will be on high alert during New Year’s Eve celebrations to curb dangerous behaviour, particularly illegal vehicle stunts such as spinning, drifting and skidding on public roads.
“As we approach December 31, a day often associated with spinning, drifting and skidding in undesignated areas, we are urging members of the public to exercise restraint and caution, as such activities pose a serious risk to life and property,” she said.
Inspector Msebele emphasised that while spinning has been officially recognised as a sporting activity by the Sports and Recreation Commission, it is only permitted at approved venues.
“We are reminding motorists that spinning or skidding in the central business district and other undesignated areas is prohibited. Those wishing to participate in the sport must do so strictly at designated locations,” she said.
Police have vowed to deal decisively with offenders, warning that anyone found engaging in unlawful activities will face arrest and prosecution as authorities work to ensure a safe and orderly transition into the New Year.
