Police in Beitbridge have arrested four suspects in two separate incidents involving the illegal possession and smuggling of unregistered medicines.
In the first case, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrest of Wisdom Munyonga (37) and Tendai Gwainda (38) at the Beitbridge Border Post at approximately 3:30 AM on Thursday, 12 March.
The two suspects were travelling in a Volvo FH truck when police officers conducted a search of the vehicle. During the inspection, officers discovered several boxes of cough syrup concealed beneath the trailer’s chassis.
Police recovered:
13 boxes (50 x 100ml) of Broncleer cough syrup
40 boxes (48 x 100ml) of Benylin cough syrup
44 boxes (48 x 100ml) of Astra Pain cough syrup
In a separate incident later the same day, police acted on a tip-off and arrested Mtonga Fumu (44) and Dereck Lonje (43) for unlawful possession of unregistered medicines.
The suspects were travelling in a Toyota Hilux towing a trailer carrying five coffins containing dead bodies, along with various groceries.
After searching the vehicle, police discovered more cough syrup hidden inside the coffins. The recovered items included:
26 boxes (48 x 100ml) of Benylin cough syrup
3 boxes (48 x 100ml) of Astra Pain cough syrup
2 boxes (50 x 100ml) of Broncleer cough syrup
Authorities are continuing investigations into the smuggling attempts.
