In what could only be described as a political version of “Wait, what?”, Zanu PF’s Secretary for Legal Affairs, Patrick Chinamasa, has announced that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is, quite literally, contractually obligated by a party resolution to keep leading the country until 2030,despite the president’s own repeated promises to step down in 2028 as per the constitution.
Addressing a provincial inter-district conference in Mutare on Friday, Chinamasa laid out the party’s position with no room for debate. He reminded party loyalists that although Mnangagwa has said he’ll leave office in 2028, “Resolution Number 1” from last year’s National People’s Conference in Bulawayo has other plans. This resolution clearly states that the president must continue his leadership for an extra two years beyond his constitutional term limit.
The result? A classic case of political déjà vu, where the president’s personal commitments clash head-on with party directives. Chinamasa didn’t mince words, urging the government to “expeditiously implement the resolution” as if the calendar suddenly had a few extra pages to tear off.
With the Annual National People’s Conference set to convene next month in Mutare, all eyes are on the ruling party. Will they amend the constitution?
Or…
simply hope everyone forgets what the president said about 2028? Either way, Zimbabweans are left watching this political sitcom unfold, popcorn in hand, waiting to see the next surprising plot twist.
