A National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) freight train en route to Mozambique derailed in the Makambe area of Chikombedzi after intense rainfall damaged the railway track.
The incident, which was attributed to floodwaters washing away part of the rail foundation, did not result in any injuries or loss of life. Initial inspections indicate that several wagons transporting coal and chrome sustained damage during the derailment.
Confirming the development to state media, NRZ spokesperson Andrew Kunambura said emergency response and recovery teams had already been dispatched to the site. He added that efforts are underway to restore the affected section of the line.
Kunambura explained that flash flooding caused by heavy downpours led to a washaway that compromised the rail formation, resulting in the train leaving the tracks. He said the railway line is expected to be operational again within the next 48 hours.
