A 20-YEAR-OLD man from Woodville, Bulawayo, has been sentenced to a nine-year jail term for raping a seven-year-old minor.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the minor, committed the offence when he was 17.

His parents were tenants at a house in Woodville, and he was accused of raping the landlord’s daughter when he had been assigned to look after her. When he appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Dambudzo Malunga last Friday, he showed no signs of remorse and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

But Malunga slapped him with a nine-year jail term of which four were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

Prosecutor Naison Chivayo told the court that on February 3, 2019 during the day, the man was left in charge of the minor and her siblings and he raped her.

The next day in the morning, the girl’s mother noticed blood stains on her underwear and she disclosed the rape. The matter was reported at Queens Park Police Station and the girl was taken to United Bulawayo Hospital for medical examination.

Malunga considered that the accused and his parents showed no remorse for the crime and that he had taken advantage of the minor.
