Mikel Arteta Gives An Update Ahead Of The Derby Against Crystal Palace

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has given an injury update of his squad ahead of their first 2022/23 assignment against Crystal Palace tonight.

The crunch London derby, a curtain raiser of the 2022/23 season, is set to kick off tonight at Selhurst Park.

Speaking to the media ahead of the promising thriller against Crystal Palace, Arteta didn’t give a lucid update concerning the injured quartet; Kieran Tierney, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Emile Smith Rowe, and Fabio Vieira who is struggling with a foot injury.

“Three out of four of those are probably gonna be training this afternoon and if everything goes well hopefully they are going to be available for selection in the squad.

“Hopefully they are going to recover because they have been missing a lot of minutes and time in the preseason and they are really important players for us.” Arteta did go into some more detail on full-backs Tierney and Tomiyasu, believing that the nature of their injuries was exacerbated by a small squad which meant they were occasionally running on empty. The reason they got persistent injuries is different reasons.

He added:

The squad didn’t enable them to recover and not play when necessary or when they were too tired, or weren’t fully recovered.

“Sometimes we had to rush them. It was a combination. Those two players are so pushy and willing to contribute with the team and that is what we done. We know with those two fit and performing at their best, we are much stronger as a team

Last season, Crystal Palace was a complete nightmare for Mikel Arteta’s side and from the 2021/22 league encounters, Arsenal only managed to grab a single point. In one of the fixtures which marked Arsenal’s slump, Crystal Palace handed the Gunners a 3-0 defeat.

However, it remains to be seen if Arteta will gain his revenge today with his new signings; Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko who are one of the best in the league.
