In Pictures: Chiwenga & Wife Visit Cont Mhlanga’s Family

Acting President Constantino Chiwenga and his wife Miniyothabo Baloyi visited the late playwright and film-maker Cont Mhlanga’s home in Nguboyenja to pay condolences to the family.

They were accompanied by Bulawayo Provincial Affairs Minister Judith Ncube and service chiefs.

Acting President Chiwenga also took time to address mourners gathered at Cont Mhlanga’s residence. Constantino Chiwenga said the late playwright played a significant role in uplifting lives through arts and culture.

He added that Mhlanga’s legacy will continue to live on long after his demise.

Chiwenga said:

I am saddened by Cont’s death. He played a big role in the creative and arts industries and a lot of our artists went through his hands. His legacy must not die

He said the government awarded Cont Mhlanga a State-assisted funeral to recognise his works and contribution to the country’s creative and arts industry.

Chiwenga said President Emmerson Mnangagwa sent him to pass his condolence message to Cont Mhlanga’s family. President Mnangagwa is in Mozambique on government business.

Chiwenga said:

The President went to Mozambique on business and assigned me to come and pass his heartfelt condolence message to the Mhlanga family and notifying you of the decision to accord the late Mhlanga a State-assisted funeral. I would like to say may his soul rest in peace. We will forever cherish your works

Acting President Chiwenga later left for Entumbane suburb where he is set to preside over the national clean-up exercise.

Cont Mdladla Mhlanga died aged 59.

A family statement confirmed Mhlanga’s death saying he passed away on Monday morning.

The Amakhosi Theatre Productions founder was hospitalised in Bulawayo recently with an undisclosed ailment.

Prior to his admission at a health care facility, Cont Mhlanga had been under constant and close medical supervision since Friday 22 July.
