Masvingo – Masvingo Mayor, Collen Maboke has said the number of municipal police officers in the city is too small hence the lawlessness and violation of by-laws sometimes seen in the streets.
He also lamented the gender disparity in the force with at one time less than 25% being women.
Speaking at a passout parade of municipal police officers also attended by The Mirror last week, Maboke said there were only 42 cops for the city of a population of over 100 000.
“There was therefore need to increase the number to avoid disorder that is sometimes witnessed in the streets. We should increase this number to 100,” said Maboke.
Twenty municipals trained by the Zimbabwe Republic Police graduated last week taking the number of officer from 42 to 62 and of those only 20 are women. The training which was conducted at Nemamwa Training Centre lasted for six months.
“I am not happy with the number of women being employed by the City Council. I have noticed that out of the 20 municipal police officers that joined the City today, only nine are women.
“The same happened with previous intakes. The force that is at work currently has a total of 42 officers and only 11 are female..
“I am assuring you that when we recruit new officers to make them 100, there will be more women than men. Zimbabwe is known for striving for gender parity,” said Maboke.
