Newborn Baby Abandoned Near Khami Prison Complex

A newborn baby boy was found abandoned under branches near the Khami Prison Complex on Wednesday, July 24, 2025. The infant, estimated to be just hours old, was discovered by passersby who quickly transported him to Mpilo Central Hospital for medical care.

Thanks to the quick thinking of community members, the baby received urgent medical attention. Authorities confirmed that the child is receiving necessary treatment under professional supervision.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police are investigating the incident, classified as a case of “exposing an infant,” a serious offense under Zimbabwean law. Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi appealed for information that might shed light on the circumstances surrounding the baby’s abandonment.

The police encourage anyone with knowledge about the incident or the child’s origins to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation. This troubling event has raised concerns about child welfare services and support systems for vulnerable mothers in the region
