The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has cautioned motorists against engaging in confrontations with officers following the circulation of a viral video showing a heated altercation between a driver and traffic police officers.
The footage, widely shared on social media, captures a heavily built motorist pushing and shoving with several officers next to a white vehicle parked by the roadside. The confrontation allegedly began after police officers confiscated the driver’s car keys during a traffic stop.
Reacting to the video, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged motorists to cooperate with law enforcement officers when stopped for traffic-related offences, stressing that confrontational behaviour only worsens situations.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken note of a video circulating on social media, particularly on Crime Watch’s X handle, involving a confrontation between a driver and police officers,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He warned against motorists issuing threats or attempting to intimidate officers in order to gain public sympathy.
“There is no need for drivers to be confrontational, issue threats to fight or shoot police officers while seeking public sympathy. Drivers are implored to lead by example on the roads,” he said.
Commissioner Nyathi further reminded motorists to observe traffic regulations, including avoiding illegal passenger pick-ups, drink-driving, stopping at undesignated points, and ignoring traffic lights or oncoming traffic.
At the same time, the police assured the public that officers are expected to carry out their duties professionally and within established procedures.
“If any member of the public is aggrieved, there are formal complaint channels available,” Nyathi said.
Members of the public were encouraged to report misconduct through the National Complaints Desk on (0242) 703631, WhatsApp 0712 800 197, or at any nearest police station.
The incident has reignited debate online around police conduct and motorists’ rights, with authorities urging restraint, cooperation and the use of lawful channels to resolve disputes.
