Mnangagwa’s Track Record: A Warning to G40 Exiles

Hopewell Chin’ono’s recent post has sparked a heated debate among Zimbabweans in exile, particularly those associated with the Generation 40 (G40) faction. Chin’ono warns that Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe’s current president, is not one to be trifled with, citing his history of ruthlessness and lack of forgiveness.

According to Chin’ono, General Constantino Chiwenga was once warned by Robert Mugabe about Mnangagwa’s intentions, with Mugabe even offering Chiwenga the presidency. However, Chiwenga reportedly declined, calling Mnangagwa “Shumba Murambwi” (a lion that doesn’t forget). This warning is echoed by a former South African ambassador, who likened Mnangagwa to Jacob Zuma, saying neither man forgives or forgets.

Chin’ono’s post comes on the heels of Walter Mzembi’s recent court appearance, where Mzembi claimed to be unwell but was spotted chairing Saviour Kasukuwere’s presidential campaign. This incident highlights the perceived hypocrisy and lack of credibility among some of Mnangagwa’s critics.

Mnangagwa’s reputation as the “Butcher of Matebeleland” is well-documented, with many still traumatized by the Gukurahundi massacres during his tenure as security minister. Professor George Kahari’s account of Mugabe’s warning about Mnangagwa’s danger further reinforces this image.

Chin’ono’s message is clear: Mnangagwa will not hesitate to jail or eliminate anyone who poses a threat to his power. As such, he urges G40 exiles to think twice before attempting to negotiate with the president or return to Zimbabwe. The question remains: will they heed the warning, or will history repeat itself?
