The Zimbabwean President His Excellency Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has safely arrived in Moscow, Russia this afternoon for the 80th Victory Day Commemorations. Mnangagwa left the country yesterday evening and he was accompaned by his two deputies, the minister of Defence Forces, Minister of Information Publicity abd Broadcasting Services and other senior government officials.
Mnangagwa will participate in the 80th anniversary celebrations of Victory Day, marking eight decades since Nazi Germany’s surrender to the Soviet Union in 1945.
The commemorations, scheduled for tomorrow 9th of My, 2025 and it will bring together several global leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko.
Mnangagwa’s attendance at this year’s milestone anniversary underscores Zimbabwe’s longstanding ties with Russia, a relationship that has deepened in recent years through increased diplomatic and economic cooperation. His visit is also expected to include bilateral meetings with Russian officials to strengthen trade, energy, and defence partnerships.
Mnangagwa’s participation in the commemorations reflects the country’s solidarity with nations that played pivotal roles in the Allied victory during World War II, and signals Zimbabwe’s intent to align more closely with Eastern powers amid shifting global alliances.
During his absance, Mnangagwa appointed Vice President, General (Rtd), Dr Chiwenga as the Acting President until his return.
