In a dramatic development, Garikai Mafirakureva, Editor of the Masvingo Mirror, along with News Editor Simbarashe Mtembo and the newspaper’s driver, Tinashe Koga, were arrested by a combined force of nine armed Criminal Investigations Department (CID) detectives and seven Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives. The operation was reportedly led by an officer named Nkala.
The trio was detained at Masvingo Central Police Station after being apprehended outside a disputed property currently at the center of a contentious land saga. The property in question is alleged to have been seized by Masvingo Minister of State, Ezra Chadzamira, from a widow. Reports indicate that the minister is constructing a school on the land, which has sparked outrage and legal questions regarding the legitimacy of the seizure.
Further complicating the situation, Masvingo City water pipes located on the disputed property have been vandalized, adding to the tensions surrounding the land dispute.
Garikai Mafirakureva is a seasoned journalist based in Masvingo Province and former editor of the Masvingo Mirror, a prominent local newspaper. His arrest, alongside his colleagues, has raised concerns among press freedom advocates, given the history of previous arrests linked to his journalistic work. Mafirakureva was previously detained in January 2023 on charges related to publishing false information, a move that drew criticism from regional press freedom groups.
The circumstances of the arrest conducted by a large contingent of state security agents, have drawn parallels to past incidents involving human rights defenders and journalists in the region, highlighting ongoing challenges faced by media practitioners covering sensitive political and land issues.
As of now, the Masvingo Mirror team remains in custody, and the situation continues to develop. The arrest has sparked calls for transparency and respect for journalistic freedom, with many watching closely how the authorities will handle the case amid the broader context of land disputes and governance in Zimbabwe.
Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
