The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has issued an urgent public alert after an inmate, Jeffrey Jingura, escaped from Harare Central Prison.
In a statement, ZPCS said Jingura absconded while working on a motor vehicle as part of the prison’s vocational training programme. He was attached to the prison workshops, where inmates receive practical skills training in motor mechanics and other trades intended to support their reintegration into society upon release.
ZPCS said investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the escape and confirmed that the matter has been reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for further action.
The correctional service stressed that it remains committed to maintaining a secure environment and rehabilitating inmates, noting that escape incidents are rare. It added that security measures are continually being strengthened to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and to assist authorities by reporting any information that may lead to Jingura’s recapture. The public has been advised not to approach him but to immediately contact the nearest police station or ZPCS emergency lines on 0242 706501 or 0242 762724.
ZPCS assured the nation that efforts are ongoing to resolve the matter swiftly and to safeguard community safety.
