The City of Harare has taken a firm stance on businesses that fail to comply with municipal laws, closing down 2,240 businesses in the city center. This crackdown is part of an ongoing operation aimed at ensuring that all businesses adhere to the city’s regulations. City officials are conducting thorough inspections of buildings to verify that they meet the necessary requirements, including valid licenses and fire safety measures.

The reasons for the closures vary, but the most common issues include operating without valid licenses, owing money to the city, and failing to obtain approved building plans and necessary permits. Specifically, 1,724 businesses were found to be operating without licenses, while 697 buildings had outstanding arrears. Additionally, 710 properties lacked approved building plans, and 851 did not have the required permits. Fire safety was also a concern, with 162 buildings having expired fire extinguishers.

Despite these challenges, the City of Harare is committed to supporting businesses in meeting the required standards. The city is urging business owners to rectify these issues and is offering guidance and support to help them comply with the regulations. By doing so, the city aims to create a safe and well-run environment for all residents and businesses.

The operation is set to continue until all businesses comply with the rules. While some business owners have expressed concerns about the impact of the closures, the city believes that this measure is necessary for the city’s growth and development. By enforcing its laws and regulations, the City of Harare is taking a proactive approach to ensuring that the city center is a safe and thriving hub of economic activity.
