Nomcebo Zikode, the Grammy Award-winning South African singer, has lost her legal battle against Open Mic Productions. The Gauteng High Court ruled in favor of Open Mic, ordering Zikode to deliver two albums to the company before she can be released from her contract.

The dispute between Zikode and Open Mic Productions began in 2022, with the court case centering around issues related to accounting obligations and a joint venture agreement. Zikode had asked the court to compel Open Mic to comply with its accounting obligations, including disclosures related to income from various sources.

In December 2022, Zikode and Open Mic reached a settlement agreement, which was later made an order of court. The agreement included a 50/50 joint venture partnership for future recordings, with Africori acting as a conduit facilitating the interaction between the two parties.

The court rejected Zikode’s request to declare the joint venture agreement unenforceable, citing the principle that agreements must be kept. The court also noted that Open Mic had provided Zikode with the required accounting information.

Lionel Jamela, the boss of Open Mic Productions, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision. He claimed that he had invested heavily in Zikode’s career, making her an international brand, and that she still owed him money. Jamela emphasized that Zikode would need to deliver two commercial albums to Open Mic before she can be released from her contract.

The court’s decision has significant implications for Zikode’s music career. She will be required to work with Open Mic Productions to produce two albums, with the first album expected to be released in 2026 and the second in 2027. The outcome of the case has sparked interest in the music industry, with many awaiting Zikode’s next move.
