The Government is expected to meet representatives of civil servants within the next few days to discuss details of a planned salary review that could take effect next month.
Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Edgar Moyo said the authorities are finalising internal processes before engaging workers through the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC).
Moyo made the remarks on Wednesday in Bulawayo while attending the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) Engineers’ Workshop on Occupational Safety and Health.
He admitted that the salary review process had taken longer than expected but assured civil servants that the Government is working to address their concerns.
According to the minister, a meeting between the Government and civil servants’ representatives is expected to take place soon, where both sides will discuss their proposals and attempt to reach an agreement.
He explained that the negotiations will involve workers presenting their salary expectations while the Government outlines what it is able to offer, with the aim of finding common ground.
Moyo said the Government is hopeful that the discussions will be concluded quickly so that civil servants can start receiving the new salaries in April.
However, he did not reveal the possible amount of the salary adjustment, noting that the final figures will only be made public after negotiations have been completed.
Civil servants have not received a salary increase for about two years, and many have raised concerns that their current earnings remain lower than what they were receiving before October 2018.
