EcoCash has issued a warning to its customers over a surge in scams involving fake promotions, bargain offers, quick loans and other deceptive online schemes designed to defraud users.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the mobile money service said fraudsters are increasingly targeting unsuspecting customers and tricking them into revealing sensitive details such as their EcoCash Personal Identification Number (PIN) or One-Time Passwords (OTP).
“EcoCash is aware of scammers targeting unsuspecting customers through fake promotions, cheap deals, quick loans and ‘too-good-to-be-true’ online offers that require payment using EcoCash,” the company said.
“In most cases, these scammers deceive customers into sharing their EcoCash PIN or One-Time Password (OTP). Once this information is disclosed, fraudsters gain unauthorised access to the customer’s EcoCash wallet and steal their funds.”
The company stressed that customers should never share their PIN or OTP with anyone, emphasising that EcoCash will never request such information under any circumstances.
EcoCash also cautioned users against clicking on suspicious links or engaging with unverified promotions and loan schemes circulating on social media, SMS and other digital platforms.
“Be cautious of websites or messages using fake EcoCash logos or claiming to be ‘powered by EcoCash’,” the statement said.
The mobile money service further warned that it will never ask customers to transfer funds to another account or wallet for “safe keeping”, describing such requests as malicious scams meant to steal money.
EcoCash urged customers to remain vigilant and to seek assistance through official customer support channels, including its verified social media platforms, by dialing 114, or by visiting the nearest EcoCash service centre if they suspect fraudulent activity.
