South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) has intercepted 25 Zimbabwean nationals who were attempting to enter the country illegally through bushy terrain near the Beitbridge border post.
The interception took place on Monday, 5 January 2026, as authorities stepped up security operations during the busy post-festive travel period.
According to officials, the group was detected using advanced drone surveillance while trying to bypass official immigration channels through dense bush surrounding the port of entry. The use of aerial technology has become a critical tool in monitoring high-risk zones commonly exploited for unlawful crossings.
The operation was led by BMA Commissioner and Beitbridge Port Commander Ntakuseni Lambani, who coordinated tactical ground patrols alongside specialised teams deployed to vulnerable sections of the border.
Authorities said the interception is part of a broader crackdown on irregular migration, particularly during peak travel periods following the festive season. Border security visibility has been increased to deter illegal crossings and related criminal activities.
“These measures are aimed at safeguarding South Africa’s borders and ensuring that all travellers enter the country through lawful ports of entry,” officials said.
The BMA has confirmed that heightened patrols and drone surveillance will remain in place as travel volumes continue to stay high into early January, warning that individuals who attempt to cross the border illegally risk arrest and prosecution.
