A chilling and eerie tragedy has unfolded at Nyachowa Falls under Chief Zimunya in Mutare, where Vernon Ndemadzira, a 31-year-old self-proclaimed traditional healer from Hore Village, vanished during a mysterious ritual last Sunday only for his body to be found drifting five days later, as if dragged by unseen forces.
Ndemadzira was no stranger to the ancient, shadowy rites performed at the falls, having conducted ceremonies there before. This time, however, the ritual took a sinister turn. Accompanied by a young man named Ryan Tinofara Hove, the healer waded into the dark, swirling waters around 5 PM, deeper than ever before. Witnesses say the water seemed to come alive, whispering and churning unnaturally as if the falls themselves were awakening.
Local traditional leaders whispered of mermaids , mystical, otherworldly beings said to haunt the depths , who had claimed Ndemadzira’s soul. They assured the anxious villagers that he would return within two days, taken into their watery realm as part of some ancient pact. But when the healer failed to reappear, dread settled over the community like a thick fog.
On Friday afternoon, a villager named Raphael Zimunya stumbled upon Ndemadzira’s lifeless body, eerily floating as if suspended between worlds. The chilling discovery sent shockwaves through the village, and the police were promptly notified. The body was taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary, but questions linger: Was this a tragic accident, or did dark, supernatural forces intervene in the ritual?
The waters of Nyachowa Falls have long been shrouded in mystery and fear, and now the legend grows darker. Villagers speak in hushed tones of curses, spirits, and the price one pays when meddling with powers beyond human understanding. As night falls over the falls, the restless whispers of the river seem to warn all who dare approach, some rituals are not meant to be disturbed.
