Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has appeared to criticise the club’s leadership following another disappointing Premier League result, posting a pointed message on social media that was later edited.
Spurs slipped to 14th place in the league standings after suffering a 3–2 defeat to Bournemouth, marking just one win in their last six league matches. In the aftermath of the loss, Romero shared an Instagram post suggesting that responsibility for the club’s struggles should extend beyond the players.
In the initial post, which was later deleted, the Argentina international implied that certain individuals only speak publicly when results are positive, accusing them of being absent during difficult periods and suggesting they “tell a few lies.” Romero later uploaded a revised version of the statement, removing the reference to dishonesty but maintaining the broader criticism.
In the updated post, Romero apologised to supporters who continue to follow the team through difficult times, acknowledging that the players bear responsibility for the team’s performances. However, he added that during challenging moments, others within the club should also come forward to address the situation, something he said has not happened for several years.
Romero emphasised that the squad remains committed to working hard and sticking together in an effort to improve results, calling on unity and focus as Tottenham look to turn their season around.
Fan frustration has grown in recent weeks amid the club’s poor form, with supporters voicing their displeasure during matches. Spurs fans have booed the team after recent home draws and directed chants at both players and head coach Thomas Frank. Tensions were also visible during the Bournemouth match, where some players were involved in heated exchanges with supporters.
This is not the first time Romero has spoken publicly about concerns regarding the club’s direction. The defender, who joined Tottenham in August 2021 and has made over 140 appearances, has previously hinted at internal challenges and criticised the board’s level of investment. He also alluded to long-standing issues when paying tribute to former manager Ange Postecoglou following his dismissal last year.
Romero’s comments have added to the scrutiny surrounding Tottenham as pressure continues to mount on the club’s leadership and playing staff during a difficult period.
