Community in Uproar Over Legislator’s Interference in School Project

A heated debate has erupted in Bubi District, Matabeleland North, after villagers clashed with their legislator, Simelisizwe Sibanda, over a community-driven initiative to provide furniture for Majiji Primary School. The school’s pupils have been learning on buckets, sparking widespread concern among community members.

During a virtual discussion in the Bubi Community Parliament, community members suggested contributing towards purchasing benches or chairs for the pupils. However, Sibanda intervened, stating that the donation would not be successful without his approval. This move has been met with resistance from the community, with many members expressing frustration and disappointment.

Despite Sibanda’s objections, the community has decided to proceed with the project, with many members contributing substantial amounts towards the program. Nkosilathi Ncube, the BCP deputy speaker, emphasized the importance of community-driven development initiatives, citing President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s mantra that “the country is built by its people and no one must be left behind.”

Nhlanhla Ncube, another community member, urged Sibanda to stop interfering with community-initiated development programs and instead offer support. The community members are concerned that Sibanda’s behavior could have electoral consequences, with some warning that it could cost him votes in future elections.

The standoff between the community and Sibanda highlights the tension between elected representatives and community-driven initiatives. As the community continues to rally behind the school project, it remains to be seen how Sibanda will respond to the growing discontent. Will he heed the call to support the community’s efforts, or will the rift between them continue to widen? The fate of Majiji Primary School’s pupils hangs in the balance, as they eagerly await a chance to learn in a more conducive environment.
