Chipinge District Hospital has gone nearly nine months without X-ray services after its only imaging machine broke down in April, leaving patients with no option but to seek help elsewhere.
The prolonged breakdown has resulted in patients who require X-rays being referred to other health facilities, while some are forced to use private surgeries at a cost of more than US$25. Hospital sources indicate that an average of at least 20 patients are affected each day.
The absence of a functional X-ray machine has significantly disrupted access to essential diagnostic services, particularly for patients with conditions that require imaging for proper assessment and treatment.
One tuberculosis patient, who requested anonymity, told The Manica Post that he was referred to Chipinge District Hospital in June for chest-related complications. After consulting a doctor, he was advised to obtain X-ray services outside the hospital due to the faulty equipment.
The patient said he later sought assistance at a private surgery in Chipinge town, where he was charged R500, an amount he believes would have been far lower at the public referral hospital.
Confirming the situation, Chipinge District Medical Officer Dr Ozzy Matekenya said the hospital’s X-ray unit is outdated and continues to suffer frequent mechanical failures despite repeated repairs. He explained that replacing the machine would be more cost-effective than attempting further fixes.
Dr Matekenya added that patients in need of X-ray services are currently being referred to Mt Selinda Mission Hospital and St Peter’s Mission Hospital, which have newer and fully functional machines. He said there are no immediate alternatives available at Chipinge District Hospital beyond referrals to those facilities or to private practitioners.
He further noted that the issue has been escalated to higher authorities for intervention.
Chipinge District Hospital caters for a wide population, serving areas such as Chipinge Rural, Birchenough Bridge, Rusitu, as well as communities from neighbouring parts of Mozambique.
