Enock Chiurawa, a resident of Chief Nyamandi’s area, has found himself in a dire situation after sustaining severe burns in a fire accident during an overnight prayer session. Faced with exorbitant medical bills amounting to US$10 per day, Chiurawa was forced to make a heart-wrenching decision to leave Gutu Mission Hospital without being discharged.
The financial burden proved too much for Chiurawa, who has no means to pay the bills. “I panicked when I realized that my stay in the ward would attract an average US$10 a day,” he explained. With no other option, Chiurawa chose to leave the hospital, despite knowing that he would not receive the necessary treatment for his severe burns.
Chiurawa is now appealing to well-wishers to help him access the medical treatment he so desperately needs. The hospital had prescribed medication, but Chiurawa is unable to afford it. “I cannot even pay the bill for one day, let alone pay for medication,” he said, highlighting the plight of many patients in Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.
Gutu Mission Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Olenga Lohela expressed sympathy for Chiurawa’s situation, describing the incident as unfortunate. He advised Chiurawa to return to the hospital, promising to do all he could to help. However, the hospital’s limitations in providing certain medications have worsened the problem.
As Chiurawa’s situation continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the need for accessible and affordable healthcare. Will well-wishers come to his aid, or will he continue to suffer in silence?
